Our Goals
Key elements in the development of CDIHP's Mission and Goals:
- Enhance the ability of Health Professionals to better provide support and care of people with disabilities.
- Educate Health Professionals to view their patients with disabilities as "people" with the same health and prevention needs as all their patients.
- Educate Health Professionals to improve partnership with their patients with disabilities, and to focus on functional outcomes as opposed to simple remediation of medical diagnoses.
- Recruit qualified persons with disabilities into the Health professions.
- Educate people with disabilities about how to become Savvy Health Care Consumers who are prepared to advocate for their own health care and actively participate in strategies to improve the quality of relationships with their health care providers.
- Educate Persons with disabilities about Health, Wellness, and prevention of secondary conditions.
- Develop and conduct research designed to increase the independence of persons with disabilities through models, which increase "access" to community health care services.
CDIHP sponsors educational activities and curriculum development for health professionals serving people with disabilities. The Center also conducts applied research to develop continuing education programs for current health care providers. These activities are designed to improve patient care delivery through advocating basic changes in social and policy issues affecting the health of people with disabilities.
